Mercy charism
Mercy charism:
a framework for caring
The special brand of nursing at Mercy is not accidental. It comes from a
carefully developed model of care built upon our heritage and a
commitment to standards of care. Mercy nurses designed the model and
have incorporated it into their daily patient care.
Explaining the model
Foundation
Our core values and the heritage of the Sisters of Mercy
form the base of the model. Part of the heritage dates back to Florence
Nightingale's formative years when she was strongly influenced by her
friendship with Sr. Mary Clare, a Sister of Mercy.
Also a part of the foundation is the labyrinth, a meditative
process used from the earliest days of Christianity as a way to focus
thought. Walking the labyrinth, nurses can assimilate the
"Ten Elements
of Caring" and "Six Influences on Health and Well Being" into their
nursing practice.
Pillars
The pillars sustain nursing services by focusing on people
(developing co-workers), service (high quality clinical
excellence) and capital (resource management).
Crown
The charism of Mercy (the gift of God's grace) is the crown of
the framework model.
