What is Magnet?
The Magnet Recognition
Program was developed by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC),
a subsidiary of the American Nurses Association, in 1994 to recognize
health-care organizations that provide the very best nursing care.
Magnet designation, nursing's top honor, is accepted nationally as the
gold standard in nursing excellence.
To achieve Magnet status,
organizations must apply to the ANCC and undergo a vigorous,
multi-faceted evaluation. The standards are tough. As of
Summer 2004, only two percent of the nation's hospitals had qualified
for Magnet designation.
