Oncology Nursing at Mercy

Your nursing care at Mercy is recognized as among the best in the nation. Mercy Health Center is the first hospital in Oklahoma to be named a Magnet hospital - the American Nurses Associations highest honor. Of more than 5,000 hospitals in the nation, only three percent have earned this prestigious award.

Mercy is proud of our oncology nursing leadership. Together this team works to achieve excellence in oncology services at Mercy Health Center.

  • Tracy Higgs, RN, MS, CNS, AOCN, administrator of Oncology Services for Mercy Health Center, also serves as director of the inpatient oncology unit, outpatient infusion services and the Cancer Resource Center.

  • Johnna Rupe, RN, BSN, nurse manager of Inpatient Oncology and Outpatient Infusion combines oncology experience with strong management experience to help guide the nursing care in our oncology unit.

  • Steve Fontenot, RN, MSN, is pioneering the role of clinical nurse leader on our inpatient oncology unit.  The clinical nurse leader acts as a liaison between the medical team, identifies patient needs for resources after discharge and serves as a clinical expert for oncology nurses in the unit.

Mercy Health Center employs nurse navigators, who guide patients and their families as they “navigate” through what is often a complex journey of diagnosis and treatment. Nurse navigators address every phase of diagnosis and treatment on an individual and personal basis. Their goal is to take the mystery out of the treatment process, to help patients overcome barriers to care, and to provide spiritual, social and emotional support.

Many nurses on the Mercy oncology unit are OCN certified (oncology certified nurse) offering additional resources and a higher level of professional expertise to our patients and staff. All Mercy oncology nurses are licensed and attend specialized oncology education that is renewed every two years.

All nurses who administer chemotherapy (100%) on the Mercy oncology unit have also received special training in chemotherapy and biotherapy. This training is coordinated through the Oncology Nursing Society, the organization that establishes the gold standard of oncology nursing practice.

In addition to clinical quality, Mercy Health Center’s 38 bed oncology unit has consistently ranked in the top 10% of the nation’s hospitals in patient satisfaction surveys, according to Press Ganey Associates, the healthcare industry’s largest independent patient satisfaction measurement company.
