Mercy Cancer Services
Robotics
Thanks to a new high-tech robot at Mercy, men with
prostate cancer now can opt for a less invasive surgery that translates
into less pain, fewer complications, a shorter hospital stay, less blood
loss, little scarring and a quicker return to normal daily activities.
The da Vinci robotic surgery involves a three-armed
computer-driven machine that physicians control and manipulate
with the greatest precision. With 3D vision, physicians can see a stereo
view of the inside of the body, magnified 10 times larger than normal.
The 3D visualization allows doctors to go inside the
body through tiny incisions. Because the nerves and blood vessels
that control bladder function and erection appear so large with 3D
capabilities, doctors can clearly see how to avoid them so patients can
resume normal or nearly normal sexual and urinary function within weeks.
