Reaching out to our community is at our roots; and
we are indebted to the Sisters of Mercy who laid the groundwork. It is
with that same spirit of charity that Mercy Memorial extends opportunities for
health and healing beyond the hospital walls - making a positive
difference in our community.
Among the many programs supported in
southern Oklahoma are:
Kids Health Plus -
A health education and
screening program provided by Mercy Health System Oklahoma in partnership with Kids Café, a
program of the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma. The after-school program
provides at-risk children with a safe haven, instruction in food
preparation, health education and a nutritious meal.
Mommy Pamper
Camp and Daddy Boot Camp - This evening program for expectant
parents offers moms a chance to relax and
pamper themselves while dads
are involved in a "night with the experts." Massages,
make-overs, manicures, hair and skin consultations, and a display of
products just for babies are provided for mom. At the same time, new dads
are learning about bathing and
diapering techniques, financial planning, home safety and interacting with a physician
panel about child development, illnesses, safety and changes in their
family relationships.
Community Health
Series - Each month, Mercy Memorial features physician presentations
on a variety of important health issues such as allergy awareness, parenting, heart
risks, women's health, healthy eating and stroke prevention. Additional
resource information is available to the community in the hospital's Resource
Center which includes a medical library, access to the Internet
and staff ready to help locate health information.
Women's Health:
Body, Mind and Spirit - Over 1,000 women attended the most
recent Body, Mind and Spirit health forum held each year in Ardmore. Women
learn the latest
on fitness, nutrition and women's health with sessions on yoga, an
ask-the-doctor panel, a discussion about stress and overall wellness and
a special presentation from inspirational speakers.
Medical Care for
Underinsured Children and Pregnant Mothers - As a partner with the
Oklahoma Institute for Child Advocacy and the Robert Wood Johnson
Foundation, Mercy Memorial helps assure children in southern Oklahoma
receive necessary medical care by linking families to insurance coverage
available for the underserved.
This includes enrolling children up to age 18 and pregnant mothers in
SoonerCare, searching for innovative ways to reach uninsured children and
pregnant mothers and identifying barriers preventing medical care.
Senior Health
Blood Pressure Screenings - Through a partnership with Senior Citizen
nutrition sites, Mercy Memorial provides home health services throughout
the county and helps educate senior citizens about health
issues. Blood pressure screenings are conducted, result cards provided and
patients are
advised to see a doctor if necessary. The screenings are also used to
provide information about seasonal health topics covering a range of
topics.
Critical
Incident Stress Management Network - Begun by Mercy Memorial coworkers
in 1995, the CISM team responds to emergency workers involved with crisis events
by providing real-time support and debriefing services. Serving a six county area, the group provides confidential peer to peer
counseling and support to coworkers after an incident (such as
death of a child, multi-casualty event, failure of a prolonged rescue or death or serious injury
of emergency workers on the job) to help return the staff a functioning
unit again.
